The owner of a modern executive apartment in Sheffield required bookshelves to match the classic characteristics and finish of her new property. Although this is a stylish modern apartment, it has been finished with Oak woodwork and doors. The shelves were designed to fit into this contemporary environment, and maintain the classic look of the Oak finish throughout. The customer required a wide single plank construction narrowing from the first shelf, in two steps to the main bookcase. The width of the planks raised stability issues, poor cutting and selection of the timber could have resulted in excessive smiling of the planks. To maintain the stability over 15″ (381 mm) maximum plank width was 10″ (275 mm) and the step-outs were biscuit jointed and glued, and cut from the added 4″ (106 mm) plank. The step-outs were finished with curved edges and the shelves were fitted using stopped dado joints, glued and pegged. The third column of shelves were finished using recessed brass bookcase strips to allow variation in shelf heights. The third column was angled at 15 degrees outward to match the angle of the study wall. The bookcase was finished with 2 coats of Liberon Bison wax.
